The Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) has warned that an email currently in circulation, entitled “The truth about the boat people” is inaccurate, misleading and inflammatory.
Here is the truth about the claims made in the email:
FACT 1
People in immigration detention do NOT receive cash payments and do NOT have access to welfare. In particular, they most certainly do NOT receive “thousands of dollars in welfare benefits” as claimed in the email.
FACT 2
People in immigration are NOT given mobile phones. In fact, asylum seekers who arrive by boat are not allowed access to mobile phones while they are in a detention facility. Their access is restricted to landlines only.
FACT 3
People in immigration detention have had restricted access to the internet since 2007.
FACT 4
While in detention asylum seekers do NOT regularly assault staff and are NOT allowed to treat them with disdain. “Violence of any kind is not tolerated in the detention environment,” a DIAC spokesman said. “Any criminal act or inappropriate behaviour is always investigated and referred to police if it required”.
DIAC recommends that anyone who receives the email should delete it and ignore its content.

Hi Susan
The boat people heading for Australia ought to be heading for the UK instead. The "irregular arrivals" who apply for Asylum in the UK are very well treated, according to the newspapers. The UK has to put up with so much nonsense emanating from the EU Gravy Train in the shape of the European Court of Human Rights that the British Government is obliged to turn cartwheels in order to ensure that the greatest possible care is taken to respect the Asylum Seekers and their Human Rights.
There was a case recently where the Asylum Seeker hailed from South America but he had been lving in the UK for about 6 years. He was gay and was living with a same sex Partner in the UK. The Asylum Seeker was held to have a Yuman Rite to a Family Life and the Judge apparently said that the couple's pet cat was relevant to this Family Life. The Home Secretary told Parliament that there is no requirement for this cat to go and catch South American mice!
Cheers
Gill
