Australia is the only country that is also a continent, and the only continent that is also an island. AND the largest island in the world.
It has the third lowest population density in the world, after Mongolia and Namibia. Plenty of room for all!
(Try telling that to someone wanting an affordable high-rise flat in central Sydney!)
If you go to Lake Eyre in the South Australian desert, you're 16 metres below sea level, but standing on dry land.
The Wollemi pine was discovered alive, well and towering majestically in a remote area of NSW's Blue Mountains in 1994. No human had ever set eyes on one before - fossil records show they became extinct everywhere else on Earth millions of years ago. The battle is now on to save this 'living fossil' from death by human enthusiasm! Propogated cuttings can however be seen in many Australian botanical gardens.
Australia has some ummm.. very unique tourist attractions, like The Big Banana, The Big Pineapple, The Big Cow (yes, I'm serious) and The Big Prawn (shrimp). But of all Australia's many "big" attractions, surely The Big Gumboot in Tully, the rainiest place in Queensland, stands on its own....foot!
