Australia's a long flight from anywhere. Having done the journey many times I have developed a kit of in-flight essentials to combat the high, dry, cramped and rarely pleasant environment en-route. I'll list mine here, but does anyone else have anything they swear by to alleviate the long flight?
Slip-on shoes and thick socks - warm tootsies keep you cosy, but you'll want shoes you can slip into in the dark when you need to visit the bathroom Lavender essential oil - sprinkle some on your blanket, pillow or collar, it helps you to relax and sleep Earplugs - essential for drowning out the deafening drone of the engines! Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream - rub it into your hands, lips and anywhere else feeling a bit dessicated Moisturiser - a must! Apply liberally Toothbrush and toothpaste - use them at least twice on the flight Wet wipes - when you're feeling a bit grubby, head to the loos to freshen up all over - you'll feel at least 10 per cent better Facial mist - find one with natural essences like orange blossom or lavender to spritz on your face to refresh it Ipod and/or laptop Music, movies, DVDs, games, cathartic bursts of prose... all help pass the hours and distract from the environment. Make use of the in-flight entertainment too. Herbal Nytol - I cannot sleep sitting up at all, which is utter hell, but these herbal sleeping pills will sometimes help me doze for 20 minutes or so. If you can sleep in seats they will help improve your slumber. Don't forget to exercise your limbs, though. Yoga moves - I usually move to the back of the plane a couple of times during the flight and do some bends, squats and lunges to get everything circulating and wake up my comatose body A book - if it's riveting you will pass several hours lost in a good book, though one's focus tends to collapse after that. Water bottle - perhaps the most essential item of all. They'll let you bring one on board if you buy it in the departure lounge, then keep getting it filled from the drinking water dispenser, because they never bring you anywhere near enough liquid to keep you hydrated.
Anyone else got any in-flight essentials? I'm keen to hone and improve my skeleton travel kit...
Haha - the lavender oil makes me laugh as by boyfriend always takes the pee out of me for having it by my bed and using it everytime I go for a bath!!! But I'm with you on that one...
I also find it impossible to sleep on a plane - I think I might need something stronger than Nytol (like a brick!)
The only other thing I'd say is to take something to suck on!! My ears always play up so I like to chew on those liquorice sweets to try and get my jaw moving and to help my ears pop.
That's a good idea - sweeties! I once went deaf for 9 hours after my ears imploded on landing due to blocked sinuses, and sucking sweets didn't solve the problem. I'd say Sudafed and a Vicks inhaler are good precautions as well.
Oh, plus soluble aspirin, to prevent blood clots...
Awww, guys must get dry faces too... But water bottles help with rehydration from the inside. The empty water bottle is a great idea.
I think young children just need to pee every five minutes. You might make them go before they get into the car, but they are busting again when you get to the supermarket... they must only let a little bit out at a time!
Spare undies are good too for freshening up but in a 'Lost' scenario they'd be the least of your worries...
I will just add that many flights have Nintendos in the seat-back entertainment system. I once passed nine hours playing Tetris. I got pretty good, even if I was seeing little blocks everywhere for days afterwards!
