I read in another forum about interview dress codes in Australia.
"You need to be in absolute western formals...A light-coloured plain
full shirt, dark-coloured trousers, a tie, a blazier, watch and formal
shoes.."
As a techie , its quite surprising to me. Is it really that serious for
interviews in IT companies? People have to wear single color shirts
with tie and only dark colored formal trousers?
As well as being a migration consultant, I own a career consulting firm www.susanwareham.com.
McGrath Migration Lawyers and my career consulting business both assist migrants and temporary visa holders find work in Australia.
In both my roles, I've worked with many applicants who have heard rather strange things about Australian recruitment practice and with regard to the advice you have quoted above, I can absolutely assure you that there is no such rigid requirement for IT company interviews.
If you were applying for an executive level job, such as a Chief Executive Officer, for example, I would recommend that you wear a suit and tie, with a conservatively coloured shirt, that could include a discreet pattern if you chose.
For interviews for any other role, you need to dress respectfully, neatly and professionally. In Australian terms, that generally means wearing a business shirt in your choice of colour, dark trousers and polished shoes. A coordinating jacket would be nice to complete your look, but not essential; a tie is not essential and I've never yet met an employer who would notice if an applicant wore a watch.
Lisa's advice about avoiding jeans and t-shirts, luminous shirts and shirts covered in cartoon characters is absolutely correct. Also avoid cartoon character ties and make sure you are immaculately groomed (which, of course, I'm sure you would anyway).
May have to consult with you on freelance IT work when I get to Aus!
Been near 2 months since my application and status still says "Application received - processing commenced"...
darn it! Was hoping for speedy processing to ensure everything was ok before I go-a travelling! Will leave documents with my mother in case they request any further info!
meh!
Yeah - IT interviews...always best to look 'smart'. You just never know what the company's dress policy is! Some places I've worked at, it's wear whatever, others, are trousers and shirt. Also, smart clothing is non-offensive, and wearing your own style may lead to an unwanted first impression as personal tastes come into play!
