Most people opt for Sydney rather than Melbourne, unsure why that is, personally I prefer Melbourne due to it being smaller and more of a community.
I think Sydney. But what do I know. I never been to any. I just had some friends who probably don't live there anymore. ...lol.
Oh thank you, everyone, especially Lisa. The city guides look great. I've heard Melbourne is a really fab city to live in but Sydney more buzzing for a visit.
For a holiday, visit Sydney - it's bright, fun, glamorous, has better weather and endless hedonist-friendly things to see and do.
Sydney is also the most expensive Australian city to live in, which suggests that it's the most popular and therefore the best. However the higher prices put some people off, particularly incoming migrants. Melbourne is the second-largest city and has a very different character, though is still buzzing, bustling and vast. Melbourne doesn't have Sydney's flashy looks or gorgeous beaches, but it markets itself on its culture instead, rivalling European cities for the arts and its alternative culture.

Some have likened Sydney and Melbourne to LA and New York respectively. I am not sure these resemblances are convincing, but it underlines the contrast: it depends what you're after.
Sydney is the jewel in the Aussie crown; the smiling blonde princess rich in iconic landmarks who seduces travellers and epitomises Australia.
Melbourne is more the mysterious, soulful brunette with hidden depths, and brains.

My best advice: go there, check them both out and see what suits your personality, your pocket and your prospects.
sydney for sure!! i've been to both cities.. i find sydney more happening and rocking too!!!

I spent 4 years in Oz and lived in Sydney but visited Melbourne a few times.  I was a single back packer type then and Sydney definitley had the most to offer.  Weather, beach life style, more of a buzz in general.  But Melbourne seems more of a city of normal life.  Also if you plan to live and buy property in Australia, Sydney is uber expensive in nice areas near the city beaches or harbour.  So if out to Party go to Sydney.  if settling down with family then Melbourne, Brisbane or Perth (although I've never been to Perth myself).
