Where do you live at the moment? What sort of lifestyle are you used to? What sort of climate appeals to you?
Australia is as diverse as any other country, so you have the choice of small town, big city, middle of nowhere, as well as the popular beach-life option.
Most Australians live in the major cities, all of which offer safe, pleasant and comfortable lifestyles and access to golden sandy beaches - a major part of Aussie life. Then there are smaller coastal communities, and the more adventurous outback towns.
As a former resident of Sydney, I'd say that starting off by exploring that city and its outlying areas would be a very good starting point to discovering Australia. Cover as much ground as you can, and find out what sort of areas appeal to you.

It's an excellent idea to try out Australia before deciding on it as a permanent destination, but before making too many long term plans, if you haven't done so already, it would be wise to check your and your mother's eligibility to immigrate to Australia permanently.
Here is a link to Australia's Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC). It has information about all the visas that are currently available; and a "Viza Wizard" that you can use to see what your eligibility would be now. Things will change by the time you've completed your studies, but it will at least give you both an idea of DIAC's requirements for skilled immigration and if relevant to your mother, an idea of DIAC's requirements for parent visas.
Best wishes
Susan
