Hi Sagar

With regard to your recent query about numbers of cases awaiting assessment, a respected colleague of mine recently advised as follows:

The Adelaide Skilled Processing Centre (ASPC) currently has 105,000 GSM applications
The Brisbane Skilled Processing Centre currently has 30,000 GSM applications
There are approximately 28,000 subclass 485 applications waiting for decision.

Outstanding non-CSL cases at ASPC:
3,500 State nominated
12,500 MODL
15,500 Other

Best regards
Susan

Hi Sagar

Thank you so much for your detailed response below.

Now that I realise the Council you referred to is the Australian Immigration Advisory Council, I can clarify the issue.

The Australian Immigration Advisory Council only makes recommendations regarding people seeking asylum in Australia. For example, those seeking refugee status and those people who are unfortunate enough to be held in migration detention.

Here is a link to DIAC"s information about the Council's Terms of Reference:

http://www.immi.gov.au/managing-australias-borders/detention/regulations/cissr/terms-of-reference.htm

As you will see from the link above, the Australian Immigration Advisory Council's Terms of Reference do not include discussing or making recommendations with regard to general skilled migration visa processing priorities.

Best regards
Susan

Hi Sagar

Can you let me know which websites advised that the Committee meeting would discuss processing priorities?

Thank you

Hi Sagar

The Australian Senate Legal and Constitutional Affairs Legislation Committee held an Estimates Hearing on Tuesday 20 October from 9 a.m. to 11 pm. They discussed a range of matters relating to the Immigration and Citizenship Portfolio, but priority processing was not discussed.

Here is a link to the Hansard transcription of the proceedings for your information: http://www.aph.gov.au/hansard/senate/commttee/S12494.pdf

Best regards
Susan

Hi Sagar

In many cases, the rules at the time of lodgement apply, but the 23 September changes apply to all cases that fall into the relevant visa subclasses, including those that were already being processed at that time. Unfortunately, Skilled Regional Sponsored Subclass 475 applications are affected by the new rules.

This means that applications with occupations is on the Critical Skills List (CSL) http://www.immi.gov.au/skilled/general-skilled-migration/pdf/critical-skills-list.pdf are expected to be finalised within 12 months of lodgement, but non-CSL offshore subclass 475 applications are now unlikely to be finalised before the end of 2012.

Here is a link to DIAC's Q&A sheet, which gives a lot of important information about the changes: http://www.immi.gov.au/skilled/general-skilled-migration/whats-new.htm. The 2nd paragraph on page 1 and Questions 9, 10, 11 and 12 might be of particular interest to you.

Please be aware that the states and territories are currently lobbying DIAC, to have the priority processing restored to state sponsored applications. If their lobbying is strong enough they will succeed and state sponsored applications will be prioiritised again, even if the occupation is not on the CSL.

Best regards
Susan
